Approximately
ten million children under age 19 lack health insurance coverage in
the United States. Children without health insurance tend to suffer
more from asthma, ear infections and vision problems - all treatable
conditions that can interfere with classroom participation. Access
to health care can contribute to a child’s academic achievement
and success by reducing the number and length of school absences.
Many uninsured children live in families with
incomes that would qualify them for free health care coverage
through the Maryland Children's Health Program and Medicaid.
Among
the most promising strategies for reducing the numbers of uninsured
children are those that involve our schools in child health
insurance outreach and enrollment activities. In collaboration with
Baltimore City Public Schools and the Baltimore City Health
Department’s School Health Program, Baltimore HealthCare Access
attempts to ensure that every eligible student in Baltimore City has
access to comprehensive health care services through the Maryland
Children’s Health Program
(MCHP) or MCHP Premium. |
